Green Smoothies – Part 1

I started a 40 day smoothie challenge, hosted by one of the Slovenian healthy food web pages on 15th of January. The process is as follows: you are to replace one meal a day with a healthy smoothie made of fruits, vegetables and super foods. If you are replacing breakfast, you are to add some granola and dried fruits to it, otherwise you just drink a smoothie as one of the snacks. Each Friday, the participants get an email with recipes and a list of ingredients for the next week in order for us to be able to shop for all the ingredients over the weekend. In the end, after 40 days, we are to assess whether we feel better than we did on the 14th of January. I will let you know!

So far, I’ve made 6 smoothies and they all tasted and looked great. These were the recipes (simply blend all the ingredients in a blender; I tend to use a little less water than stated):

1. Tangerine Cleaner (you can omit spirulina if you don’t have it or don’t want to use it)

1 cup celery leaves

2 tangerines

1/6 pineapple

1 banana

1 tsp spirulina

1 cup water

2. Green Apple Pie (soak the goji berries in some warm water before using them)

1 cup shredded soft lettuce

1 apple

1/2 orange

1 banana

1/2 tsp cinnamon

10 goji berries

1 cup water

3. Delicious Lamb’s Lettuce with Mango (I used a little less Lamb’s Lettuce to prevent it from overpowering the other ingredients)

1 cup Lamb’s Lettuce

1/2 mango

1/2 banana

1 tbsp lemon juice

1 cup water

4. Mint Green (you can use dried mint soaked in warm water for an hour)

1 cup young spinach

5 leaves fresh mint

1 pear

1 banana

1 cup water

5. Kale Piña Colada (add in some coconut for a more coconut-y flavor since the water does not taste of coconut much)

1 cup coconut water

1 cup kale

1 orange

1/6 pineapple

1 banana

6. Green “High C” (add the kiwi at the very end to prevent the blender from crushing the black spots and making the smoothie taste bitter)

1 cup water

1/2 cup parsley

1/2 cup soft lettuce

2 bananas

10 goji berries

1 kiwi

The best way to make a smoothie is to place the liquid in the blender first, then add the green leaves, super foods, fresh fruits and, at the very end, frozen fruits, if using any. Enjoy!
